Description:

Responsible for managing and directing the Project Planning Department to transform customer requirements into firm cost estimates. Responsible for all aspects of preparing an estimate for a customer quotation, including costing, materials, tooling, machine requirements, programming, inspection requirements, packaging, documentation and any other requirements. Project Planning Manager enables the department personnel to determine and communicate the best method, sequence of operations, machine, material and tooling to produce customer parts. Assist other departments as needed to utilize special tools and skills to achieve company objectives. Responsible to drive efficiencies throughout the shop in all areas, including but not limited to process flow, labor usage and output, machinery usage and capacity, and material consumption. Responsible for creating and maintaining a shop environment that fosters and focuses on safety, efficiency, continual improvement, quality, and meeting or exceeding government and environmental regulations. The Project Planning Manager reports directly to the VP of Operations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

1. Directs efforts of Draftsmen.

2. Directs the Estimating Department.

3. Checks estimates and establish selling prices, working with accounting and production.

4. Directs the Customer Service personnel.

5. Works directly with customers on special problems.

6. Completes estimating and customer service functions and aids in these departments whenever necessary.

7. Responsible for sales results; without profitable sales the company cannot remain in business.

8. Work orders are checked to see that the proper amount of material and labor have been allowed for and that the selling price is proper; if the bid is not prepared properly, the opportunity for profit will not exist.

9. This job has a lot of opportunity for creative contributions. For example, setting strategies for bidding and planning a job; important that good judgement is used when writing a bid or estimating a job.

10. Supervision is direct and includes various levels throughout the estimating and customer service departments.

11. The position has many relationships to maintain with customers, manufacturer's reps, and material suppliers -- who are also customers, etc.

12. This job involves planning of the estimating and customer service functions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

• High school graduate with strong math and mechanical experience; or two to five years related experience or training or equivalent combination of education and experience

• Extensive knowledge of machines and cutting tools, general machine shop practices, tooling and setup

• Working knowledge of blueprints, geometric tolerances, solid models and various file formats

• Working knowledge of CAD systems to provide accurate part drawings or solid models

EXPERIENCE:

• Two to five years machine shop, with one to two years of on the job training as an estimator (if no estimation experience but has solid CNC background and leadership ability, would still be considered if interested in learning the estimation part of the job)

• Knowledge and understanding of machine shop practices, equipment, tooling, understanding of calculating speeds and feeds

• Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures

• Ability to manage production schedules and manage resources in a manner consistent with continual improvement

• Working knowledge of ISO quality management systems

• Working knowledge of computer systems and the company business software

• Ability to analyze and interpret shop and production data
